A major shake-up for online poker
Flutter Entertainment has announced a significant restructuring of its North American poker operations, folding the iconic PokerStars brand into the FanDuel platform. Players in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ontario will all be affected by the transition, with Flutter effectively consolidating its poker business under the FanDuel banner in a bid to strengthen its grip on the regulated US market.
Bigger pools, broader reach
At the heart of the move is the creation of a larger shared liquidity network. Pennsylvania will join the existing New Jersey and Michigan player pool, meaningfully increasing the player base available for cash games and tournament guarantees alike. Ontario will also migrate to the new platform, though it will remain ring-fenced due to local regulations.
Flutter is eyeing further expansion beyond the initial rollout. West Virginia has been identified as the next logical addition to the network, and as more US states continue to pass online poker legislation, the FanDuel infrastructure is designed to absorb new markets quickly.
The clock is ticking
Flutter has already begun notifying customers of the upcoming changes, with dedicated landing pages now promoting the “PokerStars Exclusively on FanDuel” branding. While an official launch date has not been confirmed, key milestones point to an imminent transition — the current loyalty program winds down on March 13th, and progressive jackpots are set to cease by April 1st. A major software update and a new rewards structure are expected to follow shortly after.
A year in the making
According to Flutter lead analyst Zeljka Perkovic, the project has been in development for over a year, with the goal of fundamentally reshaping the North American player experience. Among the possibilities being discussed is the return of the iconic Sunday Million as a regular fixture on the new platform — a move that would signal Flutter’s serious intent to compete at the highest level in the US market.
What happens to the PokerStars name?
For now, PokerStars will remain Flutter’s primary brand outside the US and Canada. But the longer-term picture is less certain. Industry observers are watching the live tournament circuit closely — if the North American Poker Tour eventually adopts the FanDuel name, a broader international rebrand could follow. Flutter has not ruled out phasing out the PokerStars name entirely within North America as the new platform matures.
